Water damaged cabinets
Every once in a while, we come across cabinets with severe water or fire damage. We've also seen some that termites have done a number on. You need to know about these things and be aware of the possibility that your cabinets cannot be refinished. In these cases, remodeling the whole space is simply the only way to go as heavily damaged wood cannot be restored.
Our cabinet refinishing process
For us, the first step is always to clean your cabinets thoroughly, removing any grime, oils, or waxes that might have built up over the years. If we don't do this, then some of the dirt might transfer during the sanding phase and compromise the newly surfaced, clean wood. Leftover grime is one of the biggest reasons why amateur paint jobs don't last. It doesn't let the primer soak into the wood, which will intern prevent the paint or stain from bonding with the surface.
Once the cabinets are clean and ready to be stripped of previous layers of paint, we will start sanding them. This process can take a very long time for someone who isn't very experienced as it is used not only to strip color but also to remove any imperfections on the surface of the wood. This includes any dents and scratches that might have accumulated over the years but doesn't apply to water damage, deep burns, etc. Such cabinets will have to be replaced entirely.

The last step before painting or staining is to spray on a layer of primer to ensure that the paint will bond to the surface and that your cabinets will be smooth once they are dry. If no primer is applied, then paint has trouble staying attached to the wood. Unprimed cabinets can have bubbles of air appearing under the surface which will eventually lead to flaking or peeling of paint. This is true for all materials and surfaces: walls, cars, cabinets; they all need to be adequately prepared in order for paint to last a long time.
Depending on what kind of finish you've chosen for your cabinets, we will either spray it on or apply it with a brush. The most common method of cabinet painting is to spray them with multiple thin coats while lightly sanding each coat as it dies. This repetitive sanding and painting process is what causes freshly painted cabinets to look as if they came from the factory, brand new.
To ensure our efforts last and your cabinets shine for a long time, we will apply a top layer of protective, clear finish coating.
Cabinet staining and a potential surprise!
Do you know what your cabinets are made out of? If not, perhaps you are in for a pleasant surprise. We've had several instances in which owners have either bought new homes or were too young to remember their cabinets being made. Once our team came to do their work, they were pleasantly surprised to discover that the cabinets were made out of solid wood. There was rosewood, cherry, or even mahogany in one case, hiding underneath badly applied layers of paint.
All of these natural wood cabinets looked absolutely stunning in their natural colors, and once their owners saw them for what they were, they decided to choose another course of action. Cabinet staining then became the preferred alternative for these natural beautiful all-wood cabinets.
This is another reason why hiring a professional is a good idea when working with wooden cabinets. An inexperienced technician may miss gorgeous natural wood cabinets or be unable to bring them back to shine due to insufficient prep work.
Once we sand down the wood and put on the right type of stain, you won't believe that the new beautifully transformed space costs only a fraction of a full renovation. On top of that, the timeless look of a stained wood instantly brings up the value of a home for generations to come.
